The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, launched the Green Riyadh Project in March 2019. This project is part of achieving one of the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to raise Riyadh's ranking among global cities. The project aims to increase the per capita green space in the city from the current 1.7 square meters to 28 square meters, and to increase the total green space in the city from the current 1.5% to 9%, equivalent to 541 square kilometers. This will be achieved by planting more than 7.5 million trees in Riyadh's neighborhoods and roads. In March 2021, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince announced the Green Saudi Arabia Initiative, which aims to increase vegetation cover, reduce carbon emissions, combat pollution and land degradation, and preserve marine life. This initiative includes planting 10 billion trees in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the coming decades, thus increasing the area covered by trees to 12 times its current level. At the same time, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince launched the Green Middle East Initiative, which aims to plant an additional 40 billion trees in the GCC and Middle East, bringing the total of the two initiatives to 50 billion trees in the region, achieving 5% of the global target of planting one trillion trees. The impact of increased afforestation on all aspects of quality of life, whether livability, which means creating living conditions for a satisfying life, or lifestyle, which provides people with options for a pleasant and prosperous life, is unquestionable.
In our commitment to contributing to increasing the total percentage of green spaces through increased afforestation and the establishment of public parks and gardens, this contributes to improving air quality and lowering temperatures in the city, encouraging residents to adopt a more active and vibrant lifestyle, and providing a high-quality, healthy and recreational environment for their residents. This embodies the goal of Saudi cities becoming healthy and sustainable by achieving a balance between economic development and a protected environment. The Green Orf Company was established with the goal of producing 5 million environmentally friendly trees in each four-year agricultural cycle across several locations in various regions of the Kingdom.
